I had my first sub job today at the new school. The seventh grade was a challenge. If I knew their names it would be easier, I think. The kids seemed to expect to do very little, and wanted to chat because of that. Not good. I had to fight a good bit to keep control of the class. When the assistant principal came in to observe, they were quiet and well behaved. Not that they were wild and rowdy when she was not there...but you could tell she was one who commanded respect, and got it. I think the school is pretty well run, and the kids seemed pretty nice. Of course, they will try and get away with whatever they can with a sub, but it was better than I expected. I had a hard time finding supplies, since the room was not well organized, but I managed to find zerox paper and a NICE papercutter. Last year, the whole school had a 12x12 inch paper cutter. Most art papers come in 18x24, or 12x18, or 9x12. I had all 18x24 inch drawing paper last year. You can imagine the amount of time it took to just cut the paper into a usable 9x12. I had to tear it first, because it did not fit on the dinky papercutter. Anyway, I got home, and was talking to my neighbor on the phone when I got another call. I put her on hold and answered the second call...it was the school, asking me to come and sub in the art classes again tomorrow. Shoot! Tomorrow is pottery day, and while I certainly don't mind being flexible there, Tom had already requested the day off to go up to Clarkesville with me. I explained this to the receptionist, who was very nice about it. I would love to have the job of art teacher at the school....I think. The kids all get an hour and a half in art! How awesome! So, I guess I see now what happens.
I am really tired, and tomorrow will be a busy day. I better go study the insides of my eyelids.
Sweet dreams!
